There was a yellow coating on the teeth – what to do?

The appearance of yellow plaque on the teeth is always unpleasant. But it is even more unpleasant that a plaque, seemingly cosmetic or hygienic problem, may actually be a symptom of a more serious condition. Appeared yellow layer on teeth is a good reason to visit the dentist.

Causes

There are many reasons for the yellow plaque, but different types of this condition should be distinguished:

Soft plaque

yellow layer on teeth photoYellow plaque on the teeth, which is easily removed during hygienic procedures, and the greatest number of them is in the interdental intervals and on the border with the gum in 99% of cases appears due to low oral hygiene.

This plaque initially represents the gray — white mass of dead cells of the mucous membrane, food particles and bacteria. But after a few hours or days (depending on the characteristics of the diet and lifestyle), the plaque begins to yellow under the influence of pigments coming along with food, tea, coffee, tobacco smoke and so on.

The remaining 1% is relegated to dysbacteriosis (local or intestinal). In this case the disturbance of harmony between all representatives of microflora.

Hard plaque or tartar

Yellow plaque at the base of the teeth and in the fissures (in the recesses on the chewing surface of molars and premolars) — a mineralized, hardened soft plaque. The hardening process continues long enough, and the presence of tartar can equally testify to both the lack of oral hygiene and harmful habits.In the first case the plaque is formed due to the long presence of a soft plaque not removed during the brushing process. In the second case chemical and thermal reactions, accelerating formation of a tartar and its pigmentation enter into the game. These factors include:

  • smoking;
  • excessive consumption of coffee, tea;
  • addicted to sweets.

These circumstances, in one way or another, accelerate the transformation of the soft plaque into a solid, or lead to its intensive colouring in yellow or brown color.

False plaque

Although in this case there is no plaque on the teeth, dentists are often treated for  «removal of yellow plaque». The reason of yellow film on teeth enamel can be:

  1. yellow film on teeth photohereditary factors (if any parent has a natural yellowish shade of enamel, the child may inherit this trait);
  2. smoking and consumption of food and drinks, rich in pigments (dyeing enamel occurs under the influence of such pigments, but the process is flowing in the thickness of the tissues of enamel, not on the surface, without formation of plaque);
  3. the course of treatment with medicinal products (some of them — tetracycline group antibiotics, iron, vitamin A and carotenoids can cause the staining of enamel in shades from yellow to black).

Related symptoms

The periodic and short-term presence of yellow coating on teeth is almost never accompanied by other symptoms. You can only have bad breath, which is easily eliminated after a full and high-quality teeth cleaning.

But sometimes there are unpleasant signs that may indicate that yellow plaque is only part of the problem you are dealing with:

  • Halitosis.
    This stinking breath, which only for a while becomes less noticeable after hygienic procedures, but does not disappear completely. In this case, we can talk about the infectious process in the gums or tooth.
  • Swelling and loosening gums.
    This symptom is often accompanied by a solid plaque are in the cervical part of the tooth (on the boundary between the tooth and gum). Under the influence of gravity it gradually descends, pushing the gum and breaking in it vital processes that changes the contour of the gums, leads to their displacement downwards and swelling.
  • yellow coating on teeth photoIncreased sensitivity of teeth.
    When consuming food or beverages that are colder or hotter in relation to body temperature, when inhaling cold air through the mouth, when taking sour or salty food in the teeth can occur are. This indicates that the vitality of the bacteria present in the plaque has led to thinning or destruction of the enamel.
  • Pain.
    This symptom is most often observed when the yellow plaque on teeth is constantly in the same place, and on the other teeth nothing like this is observed. In this case, the plaque can «mask» the caries — in the cavity cavity constantly accumulate food particles, which are difficult to remove by brushing teeth. And after a while such a plaque mineralized, but under it continues the process of tooth decay caries, which sooner or later begins to manifest pain.

Treatments

How to remove yellow layer on teeth depends on the reasons why it was formed.

  1. Soft plaque does not require special treatment, but it is necessary to take a fresh look at the oral hygiene and make measures to improve its quality.
  2. The hard plaque is removed only in the conditions of the dental office. Today the preference is given to methods, not injuring enamel at removal of a tartar — ultrasonic and laser technics. For grinding the surface of the teeth are used special paste and the technique of Air Flow, with the help of which the enamel on the site of the remote stone is attached perfectly smooth terrain, which significantly reduces the likelihood of re-subsidence on these areas of plaque and its fixation there (of course, subject to all the requirements for oral hygiene).
  3. Yellowness enamel is eliminated by various methods. Among them — ultrasound and laser teeth whitening (allows to lighten teeth on 4-7 shades), chemical bleaching with the overlay of applications (whitening is available within 6-9 shades). At not enough strong tooth enamel, and also at the expressed yellow of teeth which represents a serious aesthetic problem, it is possible to be recommended installation of decorative overlays — veneers or lumineers. They perfectly imitate «own» teeth, and allow to adjust not only the color of teeth, but also their shape, size, hide wide interdental gaps and other defects of the dentition.

Prevention

The only reliable preventive means, preventing the formation of yellow plaque, remains quality oral hygiene:

  • teeth cleaning at least 2 times a day;
  • use a toothbrush with enough but not excessively stiff bristles;
  • application of dental floss;
  • if the teeth are too tightly placed or existing problems with the gums — regular, at least twice a year, visits to the dentist for professional cleaning of teeth and the use of irrigator for everyday oral hygiene.
